Country Club of Petersburg team members matched championship-best rounds of 7-under-par 65 to register a four-stroke victory at the Petersburg Cup at the Country Club of Petersburg.

The event is conducted by the Richmond Golf Association. The championship format was four-ball in which each player plays his ball into the hole, but only the best score is counted toward the team aggregate.

The tandem of Daryl Chappell(Prince George)-Tyler Eastham(Hopewell) and Tyler Gray-Eric Blythe, both of Chester, accounted for the scores that comprised the Country Club of Petersburg’s 14-under 130 total. The Country Club of Petersburg claimed its first victory in the two-year history of the tournament which began last year.

Independence Golf Club, based in south Richmond, finished second (10-under 134), while Jefferson Lakeside Country Club, located in north Richmond, finished seven strokes back in third place (7-under 137).

Chappell lives adjacent to the course’s 15th hole and treated the layout like it is his own backyard. He rode sound ball striking and a strong short game, accounting for six birdies and an eagle. Chappell didn’t need his putter at the par-5 seventh hole, where he pitched in from 30 yards off the green for an eagle-3. Eastham complemented his partner well in his own right, making three key pars on the first nine at Nos. 6, 9 and 10 to keep their momentum going.

The two know what to expect from one another.

“We’re just relaxed. We’re relaxed people, laid back, easygoing—and [Chappell] makes a lot of birdies and eagles, so that makes us a good team,” Eastham said.

Chappell made three birdies in an important four-hole stretch starting at No. 14 where he rolled in an uphill 25-footer. He added two more at Nos. 15 and 17 to fuel the team to the title. The 32-year-old Chappell, the two-time defending club champion, likely knows every blade of grass at the host layout and it showed.

“Being up there, you don’t have to think about where you’re hitting it,” Chappell said. “I already know what club I’m pulling out of the bag before I even get to the tee and I know where to miss and where not to miss.”

Also for the victors, Blythe made three of his four birdies in a late stretch in the shotgun start format at Nos. 10, 11 and 12. Meanwhile, Gray added three of his own during their bogey-free round.

“We ping-ponged well,” Blythe said. “We played well on our own ball, but if one person was out of the hole, the other person was right there.”

The 22-year-old Gray and Blythe, 23, are best friends and have known each other since early childhood.

“We’ve played countless rounds together. We hang out all the time. He’s easy to get along with,” Gray said.

The team of Cam Young-Scott Bemberispaced Independence, carding 6-under 66, while Hank Klein-Mike Prattadded 68. Young-Bemberis, whose six under score tied the second-best aggregate with two other tandems, birdied their final two holes, Nos. 4 and 5. One, if not both competitors, had scoring opportunities seemingly all day long.

“It was very much a team effort. We were both in the hole for most of the holes,” Young said.

For Jefferson Lakeside, the tandem of Greg Marbold-Marco Poccia showed the way for the team, firing 6-under 66.

Chris Corrada-Richard Wintschhad 66 for Willow Oaks (6-under 138), which finished in a four-way tie for fourth place.
